Enhancing experiences of multi ethnic service users

Funding has allowed a research steering group to analyse data and identify trends in access to early treatment for mental health issues for different ethnic groups which has provided the basis for an implemented targeted action plan

Identifying trends in access to early treatment for different ethnic groups

A research project has been funded to enable Senior Managers and Research Colleagues to research the experiences of multi ethnic patients to explore the differences that exist by involving and enabling multi ethnic service users to share their experiences.

Evidence shows that people from Black, Asian Ethnic Minority backgrounds are not getting access to early treatment for mental health issues. They are much more likely to end up in crisis and be detained under the Mental Health Act.

A small proportion of patients were interviewed who explained their experiences. Themes emerged within the reports; isolation and social housing were big factors

The funded research project allowed staff to implement a Research Steering Group to analyse four years of data to identify trends in access to early treatment for mental health issues for different ethnic groups. From the project, they were able to confirm and validate the trends by reference to individual and small group interviews and further provide a basis for implementation of a targeted action.
