Give a Gift to a Child in Care Appeal

Help us make a difference to children and young people in care

Every child deserves to feel valued, supported and cared for, especially during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Mersey Cares is proud to work alongside Mersey Care's Children in Care teams to support children and young people across Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Knowsley. Through our Give a Gift to a Child in Care Appeal, we are raising funds to provide essential wellbeing items, welcome packs and milestone gifts that can make a lasting difference to some of our most vulnerable young people.

Why your support matters

Each year, up to 1,000 children and young people enter Children in Care services across our communities.

For some children, entering care can be a frightening and uncertain experience. Many arrive with very few possessions, sometimes carrying everything they own in a black bin bag, while others arrive with nothing at all.

Our Children in Care teams identified a need to provide children with practical and comforting items that help them feel welcomed, cared for and supported from the moment they enter care.

Your donation can help us provide these items when they are needed most.

What your donation could support

Essential care packages

Funds raised through the appeal will enable Children in Care teams to provide essential items for children entering care, including:

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Toiletries and personal care products
  • Sanitary products
  • Comfort items
  • Dressing gowns and slippers
  • Personalised welcome packs tailored to individual needs

These simple items can have a significant impact on a child's wellbeing, comfort and sense of belonging.

Supporting young people transitioning into adulthood

Turning 18 is a major milestone in any young person's life.

For children in care, this transition can bring additional challenges and uncertainty. Sadly, some of the young people supported by our services may not receive gifts to mark this important occasion.

Through the Give a Gift to a Child in Care Appeal, we can provide special gifts and vouchers to help celebrate their 18th birthday and recognise their transition from childhood into young adulthood.

Working together to support children in care

Kay McEneny, Named Nurse for Children in Care, said:

"All four Children in Care teams are passionate and committed to making a difference for some of the most vulnerable children in society. The passion and commitment of our nurses, 0-19 teams and administration colleagues who manage Children in Care caseloads play an instrumental role in promoting the health and wellbeing of children placed in care."

Our fundraising goal

The appeal has an initial fundraising target of £10,000 to support children and young people across Cheshire and Merseyside..

How you can help

Every donation, no matter how large or small, will help us provide practical support, comfort and special moments for children and young people in care.

You can also support the appeal by taking part in one of our Mersey Cares fundraising events or organising your own fundraising activity.

Our Children in Care teams have also taken part in fundraisers to raise money for the appeal including the Liverpool Santa Dash, Inflatable Obstacle Challenge, Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil – it really is a wonderful way to give the appeal a boost.

Together, we can help children in care feel valued, supported and remembered when it matters most.
