Sometimes it's the small things that make the biggest difference. Funding for umbrellas, insulated cups and pram cup holders has helped make weekly walking groups more welcoming and accessible for new mothers supported by the Specialist Perinatal Service in Liverpool and Sefton.
The items meant that the group could take place during all weather and the insulated coffee cups meant that mums could bring a warm drink from home removing the barrier of not being able to purchase a drink from the cafe where the walk would often end.
"Sometimes the walk would end at a café, and while some mums could afford a coffee, others would sit without a drink — and staff felt awful knowing not everyone had the same opportunity. When we handed out the insulated cups, the mums were genuinely overwhelmed. We explained they were gifted by Mersey Cares and they were absolutely made up."
By removing practical barriers, more mums can enjoy getting outdoors, sharing experiences and building supportive connections and friendships.
