Young Carers take centre stage at summer celebration event supported by Mersey Cares

25 August 2026

The event held at The Florrie in Liverpool brought together young carers from across the region for an afternoon of support and celebration

Young Carers Event 2026Earlier this month we were delighted to support Mersey Care's Carer Engagement Team at a special Young Carers Summer Celebration Event, held at The Florrie community arts and heritage venue in Liverpool.

The event brought together young carers and their families from across the region for a day of fun, creativity and connection, while also providing an opportunity for young people to share their experiences and help shape future support services.

Supporting our young carers

Young carers play an incredibly important role in supporting family members who may be living with physical or mental health conditions, disability, addiction or illness. While many demonstrate remarkable resilience, balancing caring responsibilities alongside school, friendships and their own wellbeing can be challenging. That's why it's so important that young carers have opportunities to connect with others who understand their experiences, access support and take time out to focus on themselves.

As part of the day, young carers were invited to share their views as part of Mersey Care's Carer Strategic Plan Refresh. Through a creative activity, they were asked two important questions:

  • What do you wish people knew about young carers?
  • What would make things easier for you as a young carer?

1.pngTheir responses were displayed on leaves to create two striking tree murals, helping to ensure young carers' voices are heard and reflected in future service development. Some of the responses highlight the incredible challenges faced by young carers and the impact their caring role can have on mental health and wellbeing.

"I want people to know how hard we work in the home helping Mum."

"Caring responsibilities can affect mood, mental health and wellbeing."

"Having responsibilities may be difficult but do not define us."

Alongside these discussions, attendees enjoyed a range of creative and wellbeing activities, including mindfulness colouring, fan decorating, bookmark making, origami, a positivity wheel and bingo. We were delighted to fund these activities for the team; helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable space where young carers could relax, have fun and spend time with their families.

4.pngSupporting carers of all ages is an important part of Mersey Cares' work. Throughout the year, the charity helps fund resources, activities and opportunities that enhance the support available to carers across the Mersey Care footprint, including at regular Carer's Cafes, recognising the vital contribution they make to the lives of others.

The Young Carers Summer Celebration Event was a wonderful reminder of the resilience, compassion and dedication shown by young carers every day. We are proud to have supported the event and to continue working alongside the Carer Engagement Team to help ensure young carers feel recognised, valued and supported.
