World Suicide Prevention Day: Latest ZSA training funded by Mersey Cares released to support healthcare workers

10 September 2025

The targeted suicide awareness and prevention training is the third training produced thanks to support from NHS Charities Together

Mersey Cares proud to support essential training for healthcare staff

The Zero Suicide Alliance, an initiative funded by Mersey Cares, has released a new training resource to specifically support healthcare workers.

The Healthcare Staff and Suicide Awareness Training has been funded by our charity thanks to NHS Charities Together support  and is the third package we have delivered in the last 12 months.

The course can be taken online and is FREE for everyone. It is designed to help people recognise suicide risk within the healthcare workforce and feel confident to offer support.

Why is this course important?

Healthcare staff face unique pressures, and many struggle in silence. This short course offers practical guidance, coached scenarios, and signposting tools to help you support someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Whether you work in healthcare, support someone who does, or simply want to be better equipped to help, this training is for you.

The ZSA training seeks to support healthcare workers in:

•    Improving awareness of suicide and its impact within the healthcare workforce
•    Developing understanding of suicide risk among healthcare staff
•    Learning to recognise potential warning signs in those who may be struggling
•    Exploring coached scenarios that demonstrate how to approach difficult conversations
•    Build confidence in offering compassionate, peer-to-peer support
•    Understand how to sensitively signpost to appropriate help and resources

The course takes around 30 minutes and includes a certificate on completion. You can take it at your own pace and revisit sections as needed.

You can take the training here: Healthcare Staff and Suicide Awareness Training

This training update was made possible by Mersey Cares NHS Charity (registered charity number 1191576) and funded by NHS Charities Together (registered charity number 1186569).

We are so proud that this is the third training funded in the last 12 months.

Last year on World Suicide Prevention Day the ZSA's main Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training was updated using Mersey Cares funding via NHS Charities Together, and during Mental Health Awareness Week in April, the Social Isolation and Isolation Training was launched.

To enable us to further support suicide awareness and prevention we have a dedicated Zero Suicide Alliance (ZSA) Appeal.

By donating to our fund, you support our zero suicide ambition and help us to:

  1. Develop and deliver new training opportunities for targeted communities
  2. Help us to support people to recognise what action they can take to support suicide awareness and prevention
  3. Help us to continue our research, develop and maintain accessible digital suicide data tools
  4. Help us to keep the conversation going, sharing the knowledge and skills, and grow the nation’s confidence to talk about suicide and challenge stigma

If you take this FREE training, please consider making a donation to our ZSA Appeal to support the ZSA's important work around suicide awareness and prevention. Your support, big or small, helps make a difference and save lives. Thank you.
